Hôtel La Muette

The family-run front desk team at La Muette went out of their way to help us, and we loved our stay. We plan to return when we're in the area again. The hotel sits in a building about 800 years old, and the simple furnishings suit its historic character. Our beds were comfortable, the bathrooms lovely, and the extra-cost breakfast had a good range of choices. The upper floors have no lift, and the spiral stairs may be difficult for anyone with mobility issues. It's about a five-minute walk to the 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheater and to the shops and restaurants in the old center. Driving around Arles can be tricky because the streets are narrower than in most other medieval cities we've visited. I was glad we had a small rental car. To enter the old city, you need to call the hotel from the gate so they can lower the barrier. Make sure you can follow the map they send, since there are lots of one-way streets and few signs.

Finding the building took a little effort, though it's right in the town center. It's an attractive old building with spacious rooms and modern fixtures. The staff were friendly and helpful, and breakfast was good. The hotel runs activities with guests, but we didn't join any.

Our room at Hotel La Muette was spacious, clean, attractive, and comfortable, with plenty of natural light and extra lamps. The bathroom was fully renovated, and the room had modern amenities while keeping its historic feel. The photo only shows part of the room. I dimmed the lights for the picture, and the bedcover looks wrinkled because we made the bed ourselves for it. We spent five nights in this historic boutique hotel in old town Arles and loved it. When we took a wrong turn driving in, a staff member ran three blocks to guide us to the hotel. Every interaction with the personable, accommodating team was enjoyable, and they went above and beyond. We also met friendly travelers from around the world. We walked everywhere. For a reasonable price, the hotel has a small dining room serving breakfast and a limited lunch and dinner menu.

The location is great, but that was the best part. Staff were just okay, and the room didn't even have basics like shampoo or tissues. At night the poor sound insulation made it so loud I couldn't sleep. I wouldn't recommend the hotel. I also wouldn't recommend stopping in Arles as part of a France trip, since I found it underwhelming compared with other areas.
