Hôtel De La Marine

We landed in Arromanches almost by chance after finding hardly any rooms left in Bayeux when we booked our Normandy trip. We’re so glad we did. The hotel sits right on the beach, and both our windows looked out over the water. Our room was really nice, and the attached restaurant was fantastic. The reception staff were terrific, friendly, kind, and helpful. Arromanches in late September was quiet, which suited us. There’s a good D-Day installation with a 360 film up the hill, and Bayeux was an easy 10-15 minute drive through the French countryside for dinner a couple of nights. What a great surprise.

The hotel's location is definitely its best feature, and I had a wonderful room with an ocean view. Everyone I dealt with, from reception to the restaurant, was very professional. The downside was the flies and mosquitoes that came in whenever I opened the window, so I had to keep it shut.

That lemon tart was the best! We also enjoyed a delicious bottle of wine that felt like good value. Dinner for two came to about 110 euros, a bit pricier than our other meals in France, but worth the splurge. We’d driven over after seeing the DDay sites and had reserved a window table. It was lovely watching the sunset over the ocean, with the WWII artificial harbor’s sunken cement visible in the water. My husband had cod, I think, and I ordered mussels. Both were good.

We popped into the hotel bar for an Irish coffee, and it was just right, smooth and nicely balanced. The liqueur was great, and the place had a warm, welcoming feel. We’ll definitely come back.
