We’d happily come back. Autun is an easy five-minute walk away, and the owner greeted us warmly and had plenty of useful information. The terrace is lovely in warm weather. There’s also a bar on site, open in the evenings when the restaurant is operating, though the hours may change in high season. We enjoyed the food, and it was very good value.

We stayed two nights, mainly so we could spend a full day at Bibracte. There are Roman remains close by, including the Porte d'Arroux and the Temple of Janus, and Autun and the surrounding area have plenty more historical places to see. You could easily make a longer stay of it. The old mill has a lot of charm, with a garden, statues, a pond, and a little waterfall. The owner has been renovating it to add modern comforts and is nearly done. Best of luck with the remaining work. Inside, the lounge feels cozy and distinctly British, with two big Chesterfield sofas and tartan curtains. The food at L'Hostellerie du Vieux Moulin was another highlight: Burgundian dishes like escargots with Époisses cream, poached eggs meurette, and Charolais beef bourguignon. The menu is written on a big blackboard, and the starters and desserts were excellent too. Our room was comfortable, with a very large bathroom, an XXL shower, and a separate toilet. Breakfast was served at the table by the owner, who’s often busy at the stove and around the mill. Highly recommended.
