Between the cafés and the street performers, Place du Palais has a lively feel alongside its medieval past. You can sit with a coffee or just take in the setting framed by the imposing Palais des Papes, one of Europe’s largest Gothic buildings. It was the Catholic popes’ seat in the 14th century, after the papacy moved from Rome to Avignon. The square had been a gathering spot for medieval markets and public events, and that role continues through festivals and outdoor performances. During Festival d’Avignon, it becomes a cultural hub and open stage. Its locally sourced stone cobbles have been kept to preserve the historic feel. A memorable place for history and architecture fans, and a connection to Avignon’s past and present.

This broad stone square sits right in front of the Palais des Papes and has been a center of Avignon’s civic, religious, and political life since the papal court moved here in the 14th century. These days, it’s also one of the main stages for the famous Festival d’Avignon.

A lovely open square in central Avignon, perfect for taking a break for coffee or lunch after seeing le Pont D'avignon. You can visit the castle and wander through the old town from here too. Enjoy this beautiful place to rest.

The tour route had been changed, and the audio guide didn’t make sense, so we felt we missed a few highlights. It was a small complaint, but it affected a visit we’d been looking forward to for months. We arrived while the town was getting ready for its annual festival, and a huge seating platform was being built in the main courtyard of the Palais, which didn’t make for a great experience. If you’re visiting in June, be aware you might arrive just before the festivals.
