La Marotière

A lovely setting, fantastic rooms and a really nice host. The breakfasts were a delight.

We stayed here in 2016 and found it filthy. Mold was growing in the bedroom closets while we were there, and ladybirds covered the walls and ceilings. The breakfast room was thoroughly unpleasant, and the dog wandered freely. The bathroom was outdated, shared with other guests and far from the bedrooms. As for the bed, we didn’t want to sleep in it, so we paid and went elsewhere for the night. The woman in charge was friendly and seemed to think everything was fine. When we settled the bill, she gave us a bottle of champagne, which she gives to all guests.

We got a warm welcome at this quiet, distinctive place, and the room had everything we needed. It’s a convenient base for exploring Champagne and nearby areas, and they make their own champagne too. Breakfast is generous by French standards, though I’d have liked more variety, such as eggs, granola and a wider range of fruit. I’d gladly return.
