Domaine de La Commanderie de Ballan

We liked staying in the chateau, with its lovely rooms and grounds. The outdoor sauna and jacuzzi were a delight. Breakfast was our one letdown, as we thought it cost too much for what was included.

The service was warm and welcoming, and the setting felt magical. At Domaine de la Commanderie de Ballan, our room was stunning, with a spacious patio where we could take in an incredible view beneath the stars and trees. Surrounded by nature, it was such a peaceful escape. One of my favorite places I've ever stayed. I can't wait to return.

We stayed one night with our family of four and another family we were travelling with. The building and grounds are beautiful, the pool area is nice, and the rooms are comfortable with good air conditioning. Still, we wouldn't stay again or recommend it, because several things let the hotel down. Service was terrible. The women at the front desk seemed rude and annoyed whenever we asked questions or needed help. Trying to call or email before or after the stay went nowhere: emails were ignored and nobody answered the phone. There is no restaurant or proper food service. Breakfast costs 28 Euros per person for a small basket of bread, eggs, croissants, and meat and cheese, and our croissants were stale. The website makes it sound as though lunch or dinner can be ordered, but on arrival we were told that wasn't available and we'd have to go out to eat. At check-in they placed a 200 EURO hold on our credit card. I don't understand why, since there's no mini bar, no room service or way to charge items to the room, and we'd already paid for breakfast at check-in. We were told it would be reversed on the afternoon we checked out, but five days later it still hadn't happened. The same thing happened to our friends who stayed with us. Since the hotel ignores my emails, I now have to ask my bank to remove the card charge. After our stay I looked at online reviews, which I should have done beforehand, and saw similar complaints from other travellers. When people post a negative review or complaint online, the management also seem rude and aggressive in their replies. They never offer a polite apology or acknowledge that someone has received bad service. Based on all that, I'd suggest avoiding this hotel.
