There’s plenty to see on a walk here, at any time of year. The upper garden has flowers and edible plants, while a shaded path takes you down to a river, old trees, a pond and a small lake. Geese live here all year, and we also spotted ducks, grey herons and moorhens, with perhaps more wildlife in the forest. It’s a lovely place to visit on a sunny day.

The drive through the valley is an eye-opener, and the gardens and beautifully maintained properties along the way are stunning to admire.

It’s a gorgeous setting for an event or a long weekend away. I was lucky enough to try fresh butternut squash soup made from a just-picked squash. There’s also a lovely vegetable garden.
