The course has the feel of an older classic parkland layout, though it was built in the 1990s in an oak forest. Some holes are quite far apart, and the terrain goes up and down, so there are plenty of carts around. I played the 5.6 km yellow tees with Christine and Phillippe, and got useful tips about the fast greens and their noticeable slopes. The white tees are 6.1 km, and they say it's the longest course nearby. I'd suggest those for players at handicap 12 or better. Makila Golf Club is only about 15 to 20 minutes from Biarritz. Booking by phone was easy even with limited French, using the usual mix of French and English. There’s a driving range and a big putting green. I didn’t have time to check out the restaurant, though I heard it’s excellent. A wonderful round, and I’d happily return.

The food was superb, and the service was great. Angel, the manager, was so welcoming and has a great sense of humor. A brilliant spot for lunch. Try the steak tartare and scrambled eggs with piperade, and save room for the Café Gourmand to finish the meal.

The coffee came with little tastes of dessert, which made a perfect end to lunch. Before that, I had fish in a creamy caper sauce, and it was especially delicious.
