The rooms were clean and nice, and most of the staff were great. The chef, though, was absolutely awful. Breakfast was average, so I planned to make lunch at an empty table away from everyone else, using my own food. The chef got furious, as if I’d wrecked the place, and smashed his car up. It was completely unwarranted and unprofessional. He needs anger management. If you stay here, avoid the ogre in the kitchen.

Hotel Riviera in Sidmouth, Devon has a peaceful atmosphere and a beachfront setting. The rooms are well maintained, the amenities are high quality, and the staff are attentive. Some guests may feel it’s on the expensive side, but it offers a comfortable, relaxing, and luxurious stay.

Look elsewhere. This place wasn’t nice at all. The staff were unfriendly and didn’t speak any English. The air conditioning wasn’t working, and the bed was hard and uncomfortable. Everything felt extremely basic. Breakfast was just some bread in a basket and coffee for €7, which wasn’t good value.

We couldn’t get the Wi-Fi to connect from our room. It kept getting stuck trying to obtain an IP address, though it worked fine by reception. The other problem was the shower: there was no curtain, and without a floor drain the bathroom flooded every time we used it. On the plus side, our room was large, neat, and clean, and the air conditioning cooled it down. The hotel was easy to find, reception was open around the clock, and the receptionist spoke English quite well, which was a delight.

We paid €80 for a twin booking and were surprised to get a spacious room with one large bed and one small one. The bathroom was small but cleverly laid out and stylish. Breakfast was described to us as “very French”: juice, coffee or tea, a roll, croissants, butter, and jam or honey. At €7, the price felt European. There are two brasseries around the corner. Very recommendable!
