Staying right in the heart of Beaune is Au Grand St Jean's main advantage. The rooms are pretty standard and on the small side, and it feels quite pricey for what you get. Parking can be really frustrating, too: some spaces are difficult to get in and out of because of how other guests park. It's a good option if being in the middle of everything is your priority, but expect a high price and tricky parking.

The rooms were clean and fairly spacious, with great beds. We chose a superior room with a king-size bed for the extra space. The shower was fine.

A decent hotel for a one- or two-night stay while exploring Beaune and the surrounding area. It's within walking distance of the center, and they offer private parking for €10 per day.

“No frills” really does describe it. My room faces a wall, so there's no breeze at all to cool it down, and it gets uncomfortably warm. There was no phone to call downstairs and ask about a fan. When I got dressed and went down to the blissfully cool lobby, the concierge was personable and apologized that the central system hadn't been switched on yet. I asked if I could get a fan, but there weren't any. They did offer me a piece of paper to fan myself. Ha, ha, ha. The room itself was fine and clean. At check-in, I was told that maid service was basically by request only. I don't mind that, but it's worth knowing. The location is good, next to the old town. Too bad I can't sleep.
