Les Ecrins de Belvedere

We loved the change of scene here, it was such a different experience for us and we'd happily come back. The location is beautiful, with a lovely view and lots of animals around. Our cabin was warm and comfortable, with good heating, a cozy duvet, and a very comfortable bed. The raclette and breakfast were both delicious, and there was plenty for two. The welcome was great, and the smiling, joking staff quickly put us at ease. We had a nice little romantic evening in the heights of Belvédère, surrounded by animals. The location was easy to reach, the air was fresh, and the heating worked really well. We slept comfortably with the sounds of birds and other animals nearby, and a break from the city was lovely. Some details let the stay down. The dry toilet felt neglected and was very unsanitary inside, especially around the roof. The toilet roll seemed to have been there a while, judging by the cobwebs and other marks. The sheets were old, faded, and full of cigarette holes, though the Christmas theme and red color added a bit of fun to the evening. We found a large, bright red bedbug. After turning the bed over, we thought it might have come from outside, and the mattress itself was spotless. Because we shared a bathroom, each rental had its own key. But the cabins only close with a magnetic door, so I didn't feel our belongings were secure. It seemed anyone could have opened the door while we were away. A little more feminine touch in the decor, and especially better cleanliness, would be welcome. That wouldn't stop me from returning, though. We had a good time and would recommend the place. Merci.

The host was very easy to talk to, which we appreciated, but the stay still left us disappointed. We saw a lot of potential in the site and its hosts, so we had been looking forward to it. There were small oversights throughout: no curtain on the bedroom window, so the early sun woke us; an untidy garden; horse manure beneath the swing; a mood light that didn't work; only one working battery candle out of three; no water in the coffee maker and just one cup for two; a hole in the sheet; and a view of our toilet and the Lov'nid across the street instead of the valley. We aren't fussy and tried to ignore these things, but the raclette was the bigger letdown. It cost €80 for two and came with supermarket products, a bottle of wine, and only five potatoes. We felt ripped off, especially as the site promotes fresh, local produce. I can't see what justified the price. All told, we paid €180 for one night in a cabin, a private outdoor dry toilet, a shared bathroom, and dinner. We're usually easygoing about these things, but at that price the value just wasn't there.

The idea here is appealing, a rustic place where you can stay in unusual rooms among animals. The Booking.com listing made it sound affordable and welcoming, so we were surprised by the state of the grounds and buildings. The reception area felt uninviting, our room faced a construction zone, and the owners didn't welcome us. The room wasn't clean enough either. We'd misunderstood the Booking.com listing and thought we could cook in the room. Once we realized our mistake, we asked if the owners could lend us cutlery since we had nothing to eat that evening. They said they only had their own utensils, even though they offer meals. It felt like everything came down to money. I couldn't feel any passion for the place, which is a shame.
