Picasso fans shouldn’t skip Hotel Vidal when they’re in Ceret. The suite is lovely, with two rooms, and I paid €125 a night in the low season, which felt quite affordable. I’d heard a rumor that Picasso stayed in that suite. From its window, you can see the terrace of Picasso Cafe, where Picasso used to have coffee and drinks with the villagers. Picasso-themed paintings cover the hotel walls, apart from the restaurant, where some works are signed by the chef, who’s also a well-known local painter.

We got wonderful attention from the staff, and the service was fantastic. For what it cost, it was great value. The room was adequate, and mine came with a balcony.

The hotel opens straight onto the main street, which is traffic-free after 18:30, and that’s a great feature. Getting there by motorcycle was a hassle, though, because the street closes to traffic at that time and Google Maps offered no useful directions. The old building seems to have shifted with the ground, leaving the floors slanted. There’s no air-conditioning, just a couple of noisy fans to cool the room.

We left as soon as we saw the plates. The food came in combinations we couldn’t eat and was so bad. Don’t dine here. They need to replace the chef as soon as possible.
