Camping Le Rochat Belle-isle

The dog that roams freely around the site is no youngster, but he greeted me wagging his tail and came to visit my tent the next day. Lovely dog. I stayed a week with my tent and car, and the price was cheap. The women at reception were very helpful, spoke good English, and so did the owner. Toilets and showers are a little dated, but cleaned every day, and the water stayed hot day and night for showers and washing dishes. The paper in the toilets is no wider than sellotape and about as thick, so bring your own. The washing machine and dryer both worked well. It's an easy walk to the town centre and an easy drive to Carrifour Hypermarket. I enjoyed my stay and would happily return.

The riverside site sits in the crook of Belle Isle park and its lake, and the park is great for dog owners like us. Its own eatery was very good too. Chateauroux is a lovely town, about half an hour away on foot. There's a Camping Aire next door, but we needed the facilities here. Reception was lovely, the showers were great, and seven minutes is plenty of time. Green cred!! Good value for money in April.

The location is great, and the pitches are large, flat and grassy, with some shaded and others open. But the campsite services were in very poor condition and clearly hadn't been cleared for some time. The showers were cold, and there was no hot water for washing dishes. Those things might be fine on a free aire, but we paid to stay and expected hot showers. A real shame.

The receptionist was wonderful, helpful, and very good at English. The lake location is great, and the campsite has a few inflatables, so it's okay for children. We're a couple with a dog and are used to very basic, no-frills sites, but this place was filthy. The toilets and showers were gross, with cobwebs that looked like they'd been there for years. It urgently needs a deep clean, grass cutting, and the mixed toilets and showers need knocking down and rebuilding. If this were in the UK, it would be closed down. We paid 41.10 with our CC card for two nights, while the free aire right next door was so much cleaner. Never again. Disgraceful.
