Hôtel Gustave Colmar

The shower is open to the bathroom, so water gets everywhere. That was the one thing I'd change. The room was a bit small, but it suited my stay, and the bed and pillows were among the most comfortable I've found in a hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful, breakfast pastries were good, and the city center is a 10-15 minute walk away.

The common area has playful Lego statues and storytelling art. The staff worked hard to keep everything clean and put together a nice breakfast. It's a stylish, comfortable hotel not far from the city center.

Every morning around 7, the kitchen smell from breakfast woke us up. It seeped into the room and was disgusting. At night there was also a strong fried onion smell. My guess was that someone at the hotel was frying onion rings, but when I mentioned it to reception, she said it was probably coming from the Burger King two streets away. I don't see how the smell could reach the hotel from there. Since the rooms have no cooking facilities, I thought it must have been coming from the kitchen. The food smell from the air vents was there every morning. There was very loud music from another guest around 11 pm. It may have been a one-off, but reception closes at 10, so there was nobody there to ask them to stop. This is a hotel, not a private place where someone can blast music without regard for other guests. The room was freezing at night. Heating comes through the air conditioner, but a central unit locks it at 22 degrees Celsius, and reception told me they couldn't unlock it. After the room was cleaned each morning, the setting was turned down to 19, so the air conditioner came back on at that temperature. I'd raise it to 22 again, but it was still cold. The bathroom posters talk about saving the environment and say 19 degrees is the ideal winter temperature, along with saving water. To me, that felt like an excuse to skimp on basic things, including letting a paying guest turn up the heat. There were no amenities such as slippers, a toothbrush, or toothpaste. The bathroom itself was okay, but it had no shower door, so avoiding splashes took effort. The hotel is about a 15-minute walk from the city center. The D bus from the nearby bus station goes all the way to the Railway Station, which is convenient. The area felt safe, even at night, with plenty of people around. From my experience, the whole city felt safe. We had booked and paid months ahead, but at check-in the receptionist couldn't find our reservation. We waited half an hour, and she still hadn't found it. She said she'd look later and that they had plenty of rooms available. Even so, we couldn't check in until 3 pm. I know that's the stated time, but with rooms available, refusing to let us in an hour earlier felt stingy. The morning kitchen smell will wake you up, so you won't need an alarm.

We booked two rooms, and the sheets on both beds had clearly been used already. They were wrinkled, stained with what looked like foundation, had hair on them, and smelled strongly of perfume. How does that happen in a three-star hotel? Apparently they don't care about the guest experience. Unfortunately, it was a bad stay.
