We were left looking for somewhere to sleep in the middle of nowhere after David told us to cancel our booking because he no longer wanted us to stay. We hadn’t even stayed there, so I’m writing this as a warning. Our Booking.com confirmation allowed check-in from 16:00 to 21:00. The day before, the property asked when we’d arrive. We were driving around on holiday and couldn’t be sure, so I said sometime between 15:00 and 16:00. Internet was patchy, and I eventually saw a message asking where we were because we’d said 16:00. I explained we were more likely to arrive at 18:00. David then said it was a chambres de hotes, not a hotel. I told him I didn’t know the difference, and he reacted with disbelief before telling me to cancel. Booking.com helped us find another place, but we could have been stranded. The property later sent another message through Booking.com, which we didn’t see in time because of the poor connection. I felt the way we were treated was very unprofessional, so I’d tell others to be cautious about booking.

Frederic only speaks basic English, but he tries to teach you a little French, which was fun. We were sorry to have just one night in this 15th century manor. It feels like stepping into another time, with every visible item and piece of furniture seeming to have its own story. In the morning, Frederic served us while we chatted with the other guests around a large round table. Such a unique place, and a host to match.

Breakfast was delicious, and Frederique was a wonderful host. The manor is authentic and welcoming despite being large, with lovely countryside views and Alencon only about a 10-minute drive away. Our dog was welcome too, and everything suited us: comfortable, clean, and cosy. There are so many lovely things to look at in the rooms. We’ll definitely come back.

The breakfast was lovely, with bread, croissants, and pastries from a local boulangerie, plus fruit, yogurt, juice, and good coffee. We could park securely in the courtyard. This old building has large rooms, quality linen, and plenty of little extras. It’s full of real character, with old, sometimes rickety features. The circular granite staircase runs up the middle of a turret and is a bit uneven, a real glimpse of French history. “Shabby chic” doesn’t quite fit; it’s more shabby opulence. The owner was welcoming and accommodating, a real gent. A gem of a B&B, though it’s definitely not a sterile boutique property.

Muriel was really helpful, and there was an enclosed area where our dog could run around a bit after the long car journey. What a great place.
