Le Verger des Ascarines

A great base for hillwalking, with a swimming pool and BBQ. The small chalet sleeps up to four people.

We were welcomed warmly, but the stay was very disappointing. There were cobwebs throughout the cottage, the refrigerator didn’t keep things cold enough, and some of the meat we brought spoiled. The toilet cistern leaked, and there were maggots everywhere. I understand it’s a country house, but the cleanliness and upkeep were very poor. We left early and asked to be refunded for two nights. They returned the difference reluctantly. The owner’s husband was rude, said “in France, things aren’t done this way,” and practically kicked us out. We’d paid the agreed amount and expected respectful treatment. Poor cleanliness, maintenance problems, and unpleasant service. I wouldn’t recommend it.

There’s a warm welcome at Chalets des Ascarines, and the swimming pool is lovely. Corneilla de Conflent is well situated, with plenty of activities nearby. The stay was very pleasant, but the website photos don’t show how small the chalet is. It’s more suitable for two adults and two children than for four people as advertised. The beds are only 70cm wide, and there’s no wardrobe in the second bedroom.

The people we met were very friendly, and the place suited what we wanted. With only a few chalets, it stays peaceful and is otherwise a very pleasant spot. One thing to keep in mind: the pool is 1.80 meters deep all the way along, which may matter for children or anyone who isn’t a strong swimmer.
