Le Morne Aux Fous

The garden is lovely, with clear signs of care and thoughtful landscaping. Our bedroom window looked straight onto the pond and little waterfall ;-) It’s a good spot for independent travellers who want an off-grid feel while staying close to amenities. The Botanical Garden is next door, and Deshaies is just a few minutes away by car, with a Spar supermarket, restaurants, and smaller shops. Grande and Petite Anse, along with other beaches, are within easy reach. Arrival is autonomous, so you’ll find a key at the door rather than a bubbly receptionist. There’s no office for booking tours or nighttime entertainment. We really enjoyed our week at Morne aux Fous.

The cottages sit tucked behind palms, mango trees, other greenery, and flowering bushes. There’s a fish pond with little fountains, and the whole setting feels peaceful and good for the soul. My cottage was charming and beautifully decorated, with attention to detail throughout. The Botanical Gardens are only a five-minute walk away, though you need a car to explore the rest of Basse Terre. Nicolas and Juliette were welcoming and friendly, and gave me advice on places to visit. You can have breakfast there, and I also tried Nicolas' unusual dish of sauerkraut made from green papaya with accompaniments. Delicious. I’d like to visit Le Mourns aux Fous again.

You’re right up close to nature in this beautiful house in a "jungle." Just be prepared to get nearer to some creatures than you might want, including insects, lizards, and hens 😄.
