Hôtel Le d'Avaugour

The owner was so pleasant and welcoming, even though our French was limited. We stayed two nights while exploring the area. Our lovely room looked onto the courtyard, and the Juliette balcony, robes, large bathroom, and optional snacks for purchase added to the charm. It’s a beautiful little boutique hotel in a perfect spot, with lots of restaurants within walking distance. I’d recommend staying here in Dinan.

UPDATE: I was sitting 5 ft away from the entertainers and saw the whole thing unfold, alarmed. Paying 45 Euros for an event and then getting this kind of response from the hotel makes it clear how little they care. We attended a champagne tasting with a violinist and guitarist, and brought along a British friend who had previously been a background singer for The Rolling Stones and other bands. The violinist kept telling our small group to be quiet before playing, although we were right beside the performers, barely talking, and no louder than anyone else. At the end, our friend went to compliment him. He screeched a jumble of words at her, ending clearly with “GET SIT DOWN!” A person from our group said there was no need to speak that way, and the violinist threatened to hit our friend. It was an ugly, unsettling scene. Staff we hadn’t seen before suddenly appeared. The violinist claimed our British friend had tried to touch his violin, then hurried out. The staff treated us as if we’d started the whole thing. We all live here permanently and won’t recommend the place to anyone, ever.

The garden behind the hotel is a peaceful retreat, and the foyer is stylishly done. Recently renovated, the place feels like a lovely little treasure. I’d recommend it for a stay or a rest while exploring Dinan.

The garden on the ramparts was just right for an evening glass of wine, and the staff were friendly and helpful. I stayed in June 2014 and loved it, with a very enjoyable breakfast too. Update! I came back for 9 days in July 2016 and liked it even more. We had a fantastic room overlooking the garden, the staff were wonderful again, and the food was marvellous. The location was perfect for watching the Medieval Festival Parade. I’m already planning another visit!
