Domaine Bohème I art de vivre

Diane made us feel at home right away, such a lovely host. The studio is new and clean, set in a renovated old villa. A beautiful spot in Alsace, especially if you're hoping to explore the wine region or the Vosges mountains.

We booked Domaine Bohème I art de vivre for what was advertised as a private, peaceful, high-end stay in Guebwiller. We regretted it. The apartment didn't feel especially high-end: some wall panels were damaged, there were stains in parts of the bathroom and kitchen, and dead spiders on the wall had clearly been missed during cleaning. The noise was another problem. People and dogs in the apartment above kept us awake on the first night, and we could hear them walking around again through the following day. We later learned the upstairs occupants were the concierge and her boyfriend, who had multiple dogs. When we raised it at the end of our second day, the concierge said the old house, with its high ceilings, might be less insulated against noise than a new building. She said they'd be more careful walking around, but we still heard thumping and pounding through the ceiling the next night and morning. We sent videos taken at different times to show how clearly the footsteps carried, then asked whether another apartment was available so we could have the private, quiet stay we'd booked. The concierge acted as if she couldn't hear anything in the clips and didn't want to look for a solution because only more expensive apartments were free. We offered to find somewhere nearby and cancel the last three days, but she wouldn't agree. The only alternative she offered was an apartment less than half the size of ours, with an extra charge because it had rugs and we were traveling with a dog. Ending the stay early and canceling the remaining days was non-negotiable for her. We took the loss and left early. In all our years traveling, we've never had an experience that made us cut a holiday short, or a host or concierge so reluctant to help find a solution to a problem guests were having.

The mix of art, history and modern interiors works so well here. Every corner seems even more picturesque than the one before.
