The parking was free and there were plenty of spaces, check-in was easy, and the reception staff were friendly. The price seemed fair for what was offered, and the hotel looked clean. Those things would have earned it five stars from me. But the room had a strong artificial smell, and the bathroom was in bad shape, with dirt, chipped walls, and a shower that flooded the floor. I was there for just one night, so I was prepared to overlook that. What I couldn't overlook was finding out online, while looking for nearby restaurants, that the area's tap water had been declared unsafe because of PFAS contamination. I'd already drunk some from the room tap. The hotel hadn't told me, which left me shocked and worried. My wife brought it up with reception the next morning. They said the issue was very recent and they hadn't been able to prepare a solution. They also said people nearby were only advised not to drink the water, apologized, and insisted that this didn't mean it was unsafe. That answer felt absurd. The problem has been going on for months, French authorities have confirmed its seriousness, and local residents have shown PFAS levels in their bodies above safe limits. Residents are even receiving compensation from the authorities for the extra cost of bottled water. The hotel shouldn't decide for guests what level of risk is acceptable. Keeping this information from us was negligent and irresponsible. We should have at least been warned, offered alternative water, or given bottled water free of charge. Even financial compensation would have been a basic response. None of that was offered.

The rooms were spacious and clean, and the staff were a big help. Otherwise, terrific. Just keep in mind it's a 1.5 km walk to the tram if you want to go to Basel without your own transport.

We were able to walk into Hegenheim from this lovely neighborhood, and found a couple of cute places to eat with great food, Europe Diner & Chez Lucie. The town is a bit removed from Basel. The hotel itself is fantastic, brand new, with comfortable rooms that are well appointed. Stay here, you won't be disappointed!

There are restaurants within walking distance, and the parking is plentiful. We were comfortable throughout our stay and would gladly come back next time we're in the area. The modern concrete look worked for us, and the powerful AC cooled the room right down on a sweltering day. Basel's old center is only a 15-minute drive away, while prices here are very reasonable. It's a great base near Basel on the French side.
