Hotel Le Canada

Being able to walk to the beach made this a great base for seeing the Normandy landings. We arrived around 11pm, and the owner had stayed up for us. When we asked about drying our laundry half an hour later, she took care of it and made us tea while we waited. She was so welcoming and friendly.

The bedding and towels were spotless, but the bathroom was filthy, and breakfast was a very limited continental spread. Our room felt like an old garage conversion, with paper thin walls. We could hear the couple next door making out and two noisy lads on the other side. When reception closed at 18:00, there was nobody to help with the Wi-Fi or the noise until morning. The Wi-Fi was slow then, and the signal came and went. Parking seemed to be mostly across the road in front of other people's houses. The ferry location was convenient, but the place was overpriced and very basic. The ibis by the ferry port may be a better and cheaper choice next time, at least for the night we stayed.

We were moved to another hotel 30 km away, in a small town with nothing nearby, after being told an hour before check-in that there had been a "big accident." Later, we were told there had been no accident, just overbooking. We had booked nine months ahead because there were eight of us and finding somewhere at the last minute would be hard. When we went to confront them, they barely apologized. If you book here, make sure you have a backup plan, since they might cancel on you at the last minute.

Good views of sword beach, and the walls are thick, though that means the Wi-Fi is limited. There's no AC, but the hotel was built before the invasion and still has bullet marks from June 6th. Parking is free, and it's a nice enough place for a couple of nights.
