Brit Hotel Caen Herouville

The food was a real highlight. Breakfast and dinner both had a good range and were much better than I’d expect at a budget hotel in the UK. There was bread and cheese available throughout the day, too. Staff were helpful and accommodating, though not everyone spoke much English, so a bit of basic French or Google Translate came in handy. They were lovely regardless. I was there for work, and it’s about a 10-minute drive into Caen. The hotel sits on the edge of what I’d call an industrial estate in the UK, with no paths leading away from it, so you’d need a car or be comfortable using taxis. It’s not a place for a nice view. The rooms were small and a little dated, and the walls seemed thin. I’d bring earplugs, unless my neighbour really was snoring that loudly. Still, the room was very clean, cleaned each day, and the bed was extremely comfortable. There’s no kettle or tea and coffee setup in the room, which I’m used to having in the UK. You may be able to get a hot drink from the self-service machine in the restaurant, but I’d check first. For the price, I was very pleased and would happily book again.

The food was good, though there wasn’t much choice. Our room was nice, but the windows looked out onto car dealerships and big roads, with no view to speak of. There’s a forest or park a fairly short walk away, and many of the local sights and places to visit are an average distance from the hotel.

We stayed in early August 2017 and paid a great price. The beds were comfortable, and breakfast was good. The hotel is in an industrial area beside a Nissan dealership, but with a car it’s a good-value base for visiting things in the region. The D-Day landing sites are about a 40-minute drive away, and Mont St Michel is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes. There’s no AC in the rooms, though we didn’t need it during our early August stay.

We're still waiting for the refund for rooms booked for March 26, 2020, which we cancelled because of the coronavirus lockdown. I’d suggest not trusting the hotel reception or Director.
