Hôtel Cala di l'Oru

A really friendly, helpful, family-run place, about a seven-minute walk uphill from the town centre. Breakfast in the garden was the highlight, with homemade jams and Corsican treats. The pool is great and there are plenty of sunbeds. Wi-Fi worked very well too. Recommended.

At 150 euros a night, I expected more. The hotel is expensive, especially when there are better deals closer to the beach. We found hair in the bathtub, and there was no hot water at night because the hotel was saving energy. When we raised this with the receptionist, he didn't take us seriously and was rude. He also didn't speak English, which I would expect of someone working at a three-star hotel. The photos don't show what it's really like. I'd avoid it and look for a better deal.

There's only a machine for drinks in the evening, with beer and soft drinks. I would have liked the option of a glass or bottle of wine by the pool one or two days. Apart from that small gripe, we had a lovely first trip to Corsica and loved Ile Rousse. We'll be back. The hotel is good value, well located, simple, and has a boutique feel. Staff were friendly and patient with my limited French, though they don't speak much English. It's spotlessly clean, and the cleaners turned the room around incredibly quickly while we had breakfast. Our front room was a good size with nice views. The pool and little garden are relaxing, and the sunny breakfast room is lovely with the doors open in warm weather. Breakfast has a good selection, and dishes are topped up before they run out. One evening, a staff member played some very accomplished classical guitar in the foyer.

From the hotel you get a lovely view of both the sea and mountains. The staff are helpful, though they can feel reserved and cold. It's around a 10-minute walk to the centre, and there's a pool that could be good for kids.
