We drove nearly two hours from Tours for a taste of the original Tarte Tatin, advertised as their “maison specialty” in every guide. We left without trying it, because they had only a few cakes and those were reserved for hotel guests. That was a real disappointment. If you have the same bad luck, Bar du Marché is only a 3-minute drive away. It’s a simple bar, but the Tarte Tatin there was very good, and we recommend it.

The staff were very friendly, and I’m glad we went to try the famous Tarte Tatin, but I wouldn’t go again. The apples came in large pieces, the pastry underneath was very soggy, and at 10 EUR a piece it wasn’t really worth it. It didn’t live up to our hopes.

We arrived for coffee and Tarte Tatin just before lunch service began. They found us a table in the tea room, and the service was excellent. Great place, definitely worth visiting.

A great Tarte Tatin and a reasonably wide choice of dishes make this a very nice restaurant. I’d recommend stopping here on a trip to Sologne.
