Grand Hôtel de l'Europe

I enjoyed a delicious dinner and a very pleasant stay. For the very reasonable price, I was happy with the beautiful old room I got after booking a single. It was huge, though the decor felt a bit dated and could be freshened up to suit the building’s grandeur. The hotel is well placed on the main street through this gorgeous old town.

Our room was a good size and the hotel is in a lively town centre. At check-in we were told the car park was full, although we could see at least three empty spaces from our room, and they were still empty overnight. The hotel isn’t well maintained. The wallpaper and paintwork were damaged, the bathroom grout was poor, and the bath and sink were scratched. The restaurant had a good menu and was okay overall. One team member was very friendly, but service was slow and chaotic.

The rooms are lovely, but the parking is awful and the staff were rude. The barrier came down on my bonnet, yes, on the bonnet, and I was asked to pay for the room before we’d even set foot in it. The parking is only okay for a dwarf in a smart car; anything else will struggle. We were charged for breakfast even though we didn’t have any, though that was corrected after a discussion. We’ve stayed at least eight times, and the attitude has always been the same. Never again.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the restaurant was excellent. It’s a lovely building in the old walled town. Our room was clean and functional, though fairly small. Parking is behind the hotel, with the entrance at the side; it comes up quite quickly, so drive slowly and be ready to turn. Booking parking in advance is advised.
