The Melchior Suite turned out to be a delight: comfortable, romantic, and opening onto a lovely river view from its private terrace. We’d hoped for a different room, but a mix-up during the property’s sale earlier this year meant that wasn’t possible. We loved the dinners and breakfasts on the spectacular terrace, and canoeing on the river was such a treat. The gorgeous drives and Saint Chely du Tarn in the early morning light were stirring too. I’ve always loved castle hotels, though so many strip away what makes a castle special by gutting the inside and replacing its character with modern rooms. That hasn’t happened here. The castle feels authentic and is stunning inside and out, tucked away in a beautiful remote setting. It’s a very special place, lovingly managed. I can imagine how much work it takes to maintain a property like this. The formal garden looked different from the photos, and as a gardener, I hope they can keep it up so it doesn’t disappear. A lifetime experience, and one I wouldn’t hesitate to enjoy.

The meal at the restaurant was a real highlight, with beautifully made dishes full of flavor and lovely local wines alongside them. We also found the staff warm and courteous, always ready to help and make us feel welcome. Our room was comfortable and thoughtfully stocked, from plush robes and flip-flops to a minibar with treats. Even the fragrant soaps made the little everyday moments feel special. The chateau itself sits in breathtaking surroundings, with a peaceful feel and a lovely mix of history and luxury. We had a truly memorable stay and can’t wait to come back.

Really recommend having dinner here, especially with that one-of-a-kind view of the Tarn river. We enjoyed breakfast too, and the team was lovely and did their best to make the stay special. Such a great historic place in a unique spot on the Tarn.

The room’s size and the natural surroundings were the only real saving graces. We waited 3.5 hours for our room, then found there was no wifi in it. We’d booked months ahead, but at check-in we were told the room was being renovated, something nobody had told us in advance. All they’d done was install a heating and air conditioning unit, and the rest of the room was untouched. It felt like the way a typical French hotel might have been run 30 years ago.

Suite Jeanne was fabulous, with views in three directions, a comfortable bed, a cozy sitting room, and a gorgeous bathroom. Everyone on staff was cheerful and very helpful. We loved how the chateau’s renovation kept its history while bringing in modern touches. And the location, of course, can’t be beat. Eager to return.
