Canella Beach Hotel

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the place was clean. The beach is nice and there are restaurants nearby. The rooms could use some updating, though. The cupboards smelled musty, so I left them alone, and there should be somewhere in the shower to put soap and other things.

The view was the highlight for us, and the pool and beach had just the right feel for relaxing. After spending two weeks traveling around Guadaloupe, we found Hotel Canella Beach especially comfortable and clean. The rooms are spacious, the in-room amenities are just right, and having a kitchenette on the balcony was a real plus. The staff were pleasant and clearly make an effort to help guests have a relaxing stay.

The private beach is a lovely little spot with sea access and water-sports, and the pool is nice. The reception team were always happy to help. The rooms are more than adequate and the location is perfect, but they need checking before guests arrive: the A/C units were filthy and needed cleaning, the cupboards needed airing, and some tiles needed replacing. The hotel is a good little 3-star place in principle, but it's badly managed and poorly maintained. It feels like the property is starting to fall apart under the site director or the group. Service at breakfast has gone downhill since the barman and two younger employees left. It used to be spotless; now food is replaced only if you ask. Breakfast is continental, with sausages, bacon, and powdered eggs added. The bar was closed because of Covid, though the same restaurant opened at night, which I didn't quite understand. It wasn't a relaxing stay for us. Younger guests smoked cannabis around the hotel and ran up and down the corridor at 2am without being asked to stop. One morning there were no clean beach towels available, either because they had run out or the outside company hadn't delivered fresh ones. Housekeeping was badly organized and kept cleaning our room when we wanted to use it, even in the afternoon. Parking was hard to sort out: the barrier was left open, and outside visitors took our space.

We only stayed one night while waiting for our flight, and I won't be returning. The place felt like an overpriced dump. There were no spare blankets or pillows, just a sheet, and the closet was empty. For a 3-star hotel, that's a basic thing to have. The phone didn't work when I tried calling reception for a blanket, so I had to use my cell. On my second attempt someone answered, after they hung up the first time, and said it would arrive in the morning. I needed it that night and was only there for one night. The building is falling apart. The balcony has a large broken chunk of concrete, the bathroom looks like a war zone, and there were ants in the room. The dining area had a stray cat begging for food. Wi-Fi was poor, with the massive concrete walls, and the dinner buffet was uninspired. The food was just okay. There is a pool, though I didn't try it. How do they charge €205 for this? To me, it's worth €50 at best. The hotel is greedy, and management needs to change something or they'll be out of work soon. I clearly don't recommend it.
