Hôtel Vauban

At €120 a night, we expected a more comfortable stay and less scrutiny. We came away feeling watched and unwelcome. The location itself is the only thing I can recommend. Our room was in the backyard behind the main building, on the ground floor. It was long and narrow, more like a hallway, with very little light or ventilation and almost no privacy. People kept walking past and looking in, so we couldn't leave the window open. From the bed, the window was also a door. Each morning, water from the room above made such a loud noise that it sounded like a shower was pouring onto the bed. We also felt short on privacy around the staff. Because I couldn't remember the entry code, getting in through the hotel's front door meant answering several questions at reception, including our names and booking details. Apparently we were meant to use the back door since our rooms were behind the main building. Breakfast felt monitored too, as if they wanted to stop us taking food. A sign on the buffet said as much.
