Domaine du Roc

The washing-up sinks had no lighting. The staff were friendly, and the bar and snack area had a lively feel. There are quirky caravans and cabins. It’s a three-star site by the canal, and we saw it in especially bad shape after very heavy rain, when our pitch turned into a little pond.

There’s a pool and clean sanitary facilities, and the campsite is busy. It sits right on the canal, which makes it handy for cycling.

The owners were kind and helpful, and we met some nice people during our few days there. The pitches are spacious and shaded, though you can move into the sun if you prefer. There are two toilet and shower blocks, and the ones by reception are the better choice for a shower.

The location is really nice, but we won’t be back. We only stayed a week because we’d prepaid. As non-French guests, we didn’t feel welcome, even though we speak French. The showers swung from icy cold to burning hot, when there was warm water at all. The toilets were supposedly cleaned with a hose, but excrement stayed stuck to the walls for days. It was disgusting, especially after having stayed at dozens of campsites across Europe. One evening at dinner, everyone around us got their food first. The staff had made a mistake with our order, which can happen, but nobody apologized.
