Bastide Rose

There’s a river behind the house where you can relax with a bottle of wine, and there’s room for a picnic right where you’re staying. The grounds are large and dotted with sculptures to explore. It’s a charming house with lovely, spacious rooms. The bed is soft, and the AC keeps the hottest provincial summer days cool. Staff clean the rooms, replace towels and turn them down. They’re also accommodating with gluten and nut allergies. Pauline shared some wonderful stories, and Poppy, the owner, was gracious and caring. She showed us around the house and rooms and suggested places to visit. We had an excellent four-course dinner that accommodated our allergies. Maya the golden retriever will get you with her begging eyes! A few things to keep in mind: this is a peaceful rural retreat, not somewhere near shops or other conveniences. It’s expensive, and breakfast is $20 and minimal, for example. It’s also not a hotel, so there’s no overnight staff or front desk. You can come back anytime and unlock the front door, but we had trouble opening it once. I had to call out names around the building until someone came to help. It’d be a good idea to have an emergency number with you.

The outdoor space, with its beautiful sculptures, is absolutely stunning. Bastide Rose Chambre d’Hôte has a warm, welcoming feel and is exceptionally quiet, just right for a peaceful getaway. A real gem, and I highly recommend it.

We spent 3 days at the Bastide, and I left feeling restored in both body and soul. The house is beautiful beyond words, full of history and good taste. Mme. Salinger makes you feel like her personal guest, and she’s a delightful host, smart, witty and ironic. The pool among the fig trees, the art in the garden, and the isle between the river and the canal all create a dreamy, enchanted atmosphere. It’s a completely different experience from a hotel or B&B, and I’m sure I’ll come back someday.
