La Coulombe

The location worked really well for us, with Saint-Lô about 15 minutes away for breakfast groceries, Bayeux 30 minutes away, Omaha Beach 35 minutes away, and Utah Beach 45 minutes away. I’m a city person, though I like camping and the countryside, and it was fun to drive past the cows each day. Michael was a gracious host. We didn’t get to meet his wife, but perhaps next time. I’m already thinking about bringing my wife here in a couple of years. Two friends and I stayed four nights for events marking the 75th anniversary of the World War II invasion of Normandy. Finding the place took a while, even with Garmin GPS and Google Maps on my iPhone. We first went to the wrong house, then I had to ask directions in my broken French. Since there were three of us, we stayed in the outbuilding, about 130 feet from the main house, and had all three levels to ourselves. The kitchen and sitting room were downstairs, with a video monitor and satellite. I slept on the middle floor, which had a double bed and bathroom, while the other guys took the three twin beds upstairs. There was an iron and hair dryer, but, if I remember right, no electrical outlet in the bathroom. We could also use the outdoor spa. It looked VERY nice, though sadly we didn’t have time to enjoy it. My photos say it all!

Everything at this hotel was top quality, and Catherine was lovely to talk to. Nothing seemed too much trouble. I appreciated all of it.

We stayed in the dovecote, with charming decor and a private hot tub on the terrace. After a day exploring Normandy, it was lovely to unwind there under the stars. The owner was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the property is breathtaking. There’s a lake for boating, a tennis court, and plenty more on the grounds. It made our time in Normandy feel really special. Such a hidden gem!
