There’s a great sunset view along this very long seaside walk, with restaurants all along it. Lots of people come here to stroll. Watch out for pickpockets while walking.

Parking is almost impossible, and I was sure my car would be towed, though luckily it wasn’t. Still, the lively fishing port and its streets are a great place to spend the morning, afternoon, or evening. There are so many places to eat and shop.

I came hoping Marseille would have something to offer after reading all the mixed reviews, but the city left me anxious and worried about my safety. People seemed impatient and in a hurry, and I felt an ongoing fear of being harmed. I didn’t find it tourist-friendly, and it seemed like local residents were content among themselves, with little interest in welcoming travelers hoping to discover Marseille’s hidden beauty. As France’s second-largest and oldest city, and a port, I expected more. Instead, I encountered catcalls, union strikes, poor Uber service, a lack of civic sense, and very poor infrastructure. Bouillabaisse, the garlic- and saffron-flavoured fish stew, is probably the only thing the city is famous for. After visiting many cities across Europe, I’ve never experienced citizens who seemed so impatient. All show and no soul.

The harbour is full of lovely fishing boats, with views of Fort St Jean. It’s a charming, lively spot to wander around Marseille.
