The flat was reasonably sized, but the upkeep was terrible, especially for what it cost. It’s on the fifth floor, 121 steps up from the street. The only lift was out of order, so we had to haul our suitcases up and back down the stairs. There were leaks from the water pipes, unsafe electrics, and air conditioners that didn’t work. We couldn’t open the windows because a restaurant chimney beside one of them sent smelly, toxic fumes inside. There were mouse traps all over the building, which made the vermin problem hard to miss. In the second bedroom, a broken light fitting had exposed wires and was dangerous. I’m sure I’d have been better off staying somewhere else.

The city itself is fantastic, but the apartment left us really unhappy. It was poorly looked after: there was damp, a bulb needed fixing, a loose electrical outlet, and a temperamental toilet. There was no mirror or clothes hooks, the lighting was inadequate, and we had only one dish towel for four people for the whole stay. The owner didn’t seem to take any of these shortcomings into account, which was a shame since this was a service she provided. It wouldn’t take much to make the place superb. And the broken elevator made us even angrier. Some kind of compensation, whether a gift or money, would have helped.

Loved our stay! We got a great welcome, and the place seemed very clean and had good facilities. The port view was lovely, and everything was close by.
