Hotel Chambord

The reception staff were a real highlight: kind, helpful and even funny. The location worked so well for us, with the boardwalk, beach and port just minutes away, and restaurants and cozy coffee shops a short walk along a beautiful central street. I expected a nicer room from the photos. The pillowcases and bed cover seemed a little worn, though the room was comfortable overall. The bathroom had plenty of space but felt dated. The shower curtain was too short, so water went everywhere when we showered. I get the impression many hotels nearby are similar and not very modern. The lobby had a strong cigarette smell. For a hotel that advertises itself as non-smoking, that gave a mixed impression.

Our room for three was spacious, clean and cool enough, and the balcony had a great view. Breakfast was brought to us, so we could enjoy it out there. The receptionist was so helpful when I asked for ice for an injury, they ran across the road to get some. Super service! The Wi-Fi was horrible, but I was on holiday and barely had time to use it. We stayed three nights and four days. Menton is a great place to visit, and this was a perfect base for seeing the French Riviera.

The location was wonderful, and breakfast came right to our room. The staff were great and friendly. Highly recommend!

Hotel Chambord is in a lovely, safe part of town, with shops across the street, plenty of bus options and the train station right outside. It’s also a 15-minute walk downhill from Grand Palace if you feel like walking. My room was small but big enough for me as a solo traveler. The bed was comfortable, and the soft pillows were especially welcome after a day roaming the city. Breakfast was a nice buffet with pastries, bacon and eggs, and the hot chocolate was the cherry on top. Having the same meal each morning for a week got a little tiring, but it wasn’t a big deal. They cleaned the room and changed the sheets and towels every day. The walls blocked most hallway noise, though door slams, running footsteps in the middle of the night and cleaners rolling their trolly still woke me as a light sleeper. I didn’t lose sleep over it, though. The AC wouldn’t go below 20 deg, so the room could get warm. I freeze easily, so it wasn’t a big issue for me, but I would’ve liked the option to make it colder. The room also had a smell I can’t quite describe, like sweat and human odor, as if someone had just been there even after cleaning and fresh sheets. Turning on the AC made it go away, but it lingered in the pillow and carpets. The shower was VERY slippery, and I almost fell once, but managed to grab something. The elevator is very narrow, with room for only 2-3 people. I had an early train and asked for a packed breakfast since the buffet starts at 7am. I’ve had some hotels offer one when asked, but they said they don’t do that here. Understandable, but a bummer. Reception also wasn’t always manned; I came and went without anyone seeing me. Maybe there’s a camera at the back monitoring comings and goings. The Wi-Fi was unstable too.
