Auberge de Choucas is for people who like old-fashioned service, superb food, and a place where personal attention matters more than procedures. I’d say check in and just go with it. We arrived to a warm welcome and no paperwork. There was an old key on a wooden hanger, which we left at the desk whenever we went out. Dinner was five or six flawless courses, served by personable young men in suits. The monkfish was one of the best meals of my life. Real silverware, too. Madame watched every detail of the place closely. We stayed four nights and were glad to pay the handwritten bill, which was entirely accurate. It felt like great value, and it was fun seeing our adolescent children sit up straight and enjoy a leisurely two-hour dinner. The location is central and easy to explore on foot. Parking is a bit of a hassle, but once you’ve parked, there’s no need for the car unless you’re leaving town. The church bells are loud and lovely, and dogs wander freely through the village. Renting a ski locker at the ski center is worth the cost. The WiFi was spotty, and the downstairs bathroom in our family apartment could use a ventilation fan. Neither got in the way of a memorable, superb stay.

The garden terrace is wonderful, and the service is excellent. To me, this is the best restaurant in Serre Chevalier. I’ve never seen such a selection of excellent wines, and the food is amazing. There are pricier restaurants in the valley, but they don’t come close. If you get the chance to talk with the owner, take it. She’ll leave an impression.

The restaurant’s food was amazing, and I’d highly recommend it. The hotel itself is a delightful little place, full of interesting old pictures and lovely furnishings. It’s a very old building with a quirky layout. Our room was gorgeous, with an enormous bed, a lovely balcony, and a nice en-suite.

The hotel owner is a very polite lady, and the staff are so friendly. The maid in particular takes great care of the guests’ comfort. Our room was big, comfortable, and very clean, including the bathroom. The food was tasty and fresh every day. It’s a perfect holiday spot. I’d definitely recommend it, and we’ll gladly come back.

We only ate at the restaurant, and the whole experience felt like Fawlty Towers. The meal was massively overpriced and not very good. For €37 I got one sausage, a few onions, fried broccoli, and some unseasoned new potatoes. The place had a strange, run-down old lady seaside hotel feel, like Great Yarmouth. The waiters wore bow ties and the dishes arrived under silver lids. A French couple at the next table kept laughing at everything, so it clearly wasn’t just a cultural thing. Then a woman I assume was the owner started shouting at a waiter in the middle of the dining room, which was unforgivable. Monetier has loads of amazing restaurants. We ended up here because we hadn’t booked on a Saturday night and couldn’t get a table anywhere else. Being able to get one here says it all. I did feel sorry for the waiters, who were obviously trying their best.
