Hotel de Bouilhac is a lovely historic building, well placed for exploring the Dordogne. The rooms are spacious, the beds very comfortable, and the big bathtub was great for relaxing. Breakfast was tasty and usually plentiful, though one morning there was no hot food left by 9 am. It sounded like someone had called in sick, but we still paid the full breakfast price, which seemed odd. The building is well kept, but sound travels through the floors and walls, and motorbikes on the street can be noisy at night. With children aged 4 and 6, I found it hard to relax. Even their ordinary walking around our room sounded like elephants. Friends staying on the other side of the hotel got a noise complaint from the room below, despite the noise happening during the day. That seemed over the top to me, since children will be children. Because we were traveling with them, reception also lectured me about child noise, though they said nobody had complained about our room or my children. It made the stay difficult, so I wouldn’t recommend the hotel to families with young kids. For adults, it’s a lovely place.

The staff were wonderful, friendly and helpful. They showed us around and suggested restaurants, shops, and attractions. The hotel also has a very good restaurant, and free parking was a nice bonus. It’s right beside the river, about a five-minute walk from shops and restaurants. Montignac is a beautiful little town and a convenient base for visiting caves and other nearby sights. The building is a 17th-century mansion that belonged to a king’s private physician. Its renovation mixes old features like wooden floors, window frames, glass, and doors with modern bathrooms, rustic furnishings, and a lovely vintage feel. A few details are inconvenient, such as the bathroom door latches, but nothing major.

We slept well in a very comfortable room and woke refreshed for the next leg of our trip. Breakfast suited our needs, and the service there was excellent, as was the reception when we arrived. We settled in quickly for our overnight stop and weren’t disappointed with our choice of Hotel Bouilhac, which we picked for its location on the way from San Sebastian to Burgundy. We skipped dinner at the hotel after enjoying plenty of good food before arriving, and had dinner in the village after drinks at the nearby Relais. We’d happily recommend the hotel.

We were here for two nights before our nearby wedding, and the team took wonderful care of us, especially Loic. The beds were comfortable, everything was clean, and breakfast was lovely. I also liked having the salon. The hotel had a romantic imperial style while still offering modern amenities, and everything in Montignac-Lascaux is close by. We can’t wait to come back.
