Annie was incredibly kind and made sure we had a meal on New Year’s Eve, even though every restaurant in town was closed. The restaurant here was shut for renovations during our visit in 2019, but we were treated like family and would return in a heartbeat. Annie is the fourth generation of her family to run the place and was born in the building. The hotel itself is in a charming former post relay where merchants once stopped with their goods, right on the Vézère in Montignac. There’s a riverside footpath around the corner, the tourist center is close by, and Grotte Lascaux is about a five-minute drive away.

The friendly service made the disappointing meal a little easier to take. The setting is beautifully refined, but the food didn’t meet the expectations created by a menu described as “nouvelle cuisine.” There’s a lot written about each dish, yet the portions are small and the experimental flavors left me unsure what I was eating. I left thinking I’d need a proper pizza to feel full.

The owner is charming and really attentive to guests. The rest of the place needs attention, though. Our room wasn’t very clean, the shower pressure was weak, and a nasty sewer smell came up in the bathroom. There wasn’t much soundproofing either. Breakfast had plenty of variety, but the room itself was dirty, with cat hairs on the table and chairs, spiders, and dead flies on the tables. I called it the Halloween hotel.

The owner and waitress were pleasant, but I wouldn’t recommend the restaurant. The rococo look seems to cover up how poor the experience is. With those prices and such grand dish names, we expected a good meal, but it was disappointing: the food wasn’t good, portions were meager, and the ingredients seemed stale. There was no white wine and no aperitif was offered.

Breakfast was generous and served on the terrace, which has a lot of potential. The manager gave us a very warm welcome, and the bed and sheets were clean overall. It’s a pleasant place and a handy base for visiting Lascaux 4, less than a kilometer away. I didn’t try the restaurant, so I can’t comment on it.
