Chateau Saint-Jean

The barman deserves a special mention for taking such good care of us and our 10-year-old daughter. Our standard room was also very spacious for three, even with the sofa bed open. We only stayed one night on the way south, but left feeling thoroughly refreshed after a lovely short visit and an incredible meal. When we arrived in pouring rain, the porter brought a trolley and umbrella to the car, got my wife and daughter inside and dry, and helped me set up the onsite charger for the car. It was 11 kW AC, and contactless payment worked. We also used the spa: the small indoor pool was gorgeous and the steam room excellent. Dinner at the Michelin-starred restaurant was exemplary, both the food and service, and the converted 12th-century chapel setting was magical.

The restaurant menu is small, but the food is exquisite, and the breakfast buffet had pretty much everything I’d expect from a five-star hotel. Service was superb across the reception, valet and restaurant. The rooms are modern, very new and comfortable, with quiet air conditioning and a bed that makes it hard to get up in the morning. The hotel sits beside a park, which is lovely for a walk after a meal, and the area is peaceful with no outside noise bothering you. Montluçon may not be much of a tourist destination, but if you’re crossing France and need a stop, I highly recommend this place. It’s by far the best hotel in central France, including the Lyon region. Why this gem is in Montluçon? The GM can tell you more, but the landlord also owns La Reserve in St tropez, and you can feel that same standard here.

The staff made the visit stress-free, and the whole team was friendly and helpful. We had no issues during our quick stay on the way home. There’s a beautiful, quiet park on the grounds where I could walk my dog. I only wish I’d had more time to enjoy the restaurant and facilities. Thanks to the staff!
