The food and wine were lovely, but what my wife and I keep remembering is the time we spent talking with Alain and Isabelle. They’re warm, charming hosts, and we chatted easily about the castle’s history, their work on the land, day-to-day upkeep, and the ongoing renovations. We added their dinner option, which turned out to be a real highlight of our trip to France. It began with Champagne and light snacks in a parlor, then moved to the dining room for a quaint candlelit meal. The atmosphere was hard to beat. Chateau de Bourgon is a 13th-century castle, and while plenty of French chateaux have been renovated with modern comforts, this place may not suit you if that’s what you’re after. For an authentic stay, though, it’s the spot.

The owners, Alain and Isabelle, are so warm and welcoming, and they speak very good English. I loved the little handwritten notes in French beneath some of the interesting objects and paintings. They’re easy to translate on your phone. The Chateau feels as if time has stood still. You get a glimpse of life in the past, and it’s clear the owners have taken care to preserve its history. If authenticity is what you’re looking for, this is the Chateau for you. It was the highlight of my holiday in France.

We loved our stay and are planning to come back for longer. Alain and Isabelle were kind and welcoming, and they joined us for meals and shared stories about the castle. We had breakfast and dinner, which cost extra, and both were exquisitely prepared with a real farm-to-table feel. We were also lucky to be there while an international concert pianist arrived early to prepare for a concert at the chateau. What a treat. The setting is beautiful. Our jaws dropped as we drove up and saw the stunning castle.

A wonderful stopover, with a charming couple hosting us. They even rustled up an evening meal at short notice, though it’s probably best to ask in advance. The chateau is full of historical artefacts and feels like a genuine glimpse of life in days gone by, only with better plumbing. It isn’t pretentious. Highly recommended!
