After a cycle ride, we stopped in just for a drink. The owner and staff were really friendly, and nothing seemed too much trouble. The food looked good, though we didn’t eat; we would have come back if we’d been in the area longer. From the front it doesn’t look like much, but there’s a lovely rear courtyard garden.

We’d been turned away by several other restaurants in town before we found this place for lunch. The owner welcomed us warmly, and the food was delicious. We sat in the beautiful garden, and they were very accommodating with babies and children.

The owner-manager has a quirky sense of humour, including his “I speak no French” line, and gave each couple a lovely gift before we left. We’re four people over seventy, and we had a most pleasant evening at Splendid in early June. Drinks in the enclosed patio were followed by a perfect dinner in the dining room. The owners and chef were friendly, welcoming, and accommodating, and we had a lovely meal at Hotel splendid. The large fish pond in the garden makes for a calm, chilled place to eat outside. We spent a great evening in beautiful, authentic surroundings. Can’t wait to return to Montreuil Bellay and come back again!

The owner found room for our party of 11 after lots of other places had turned us away. We had a lovely lunch in the garden by the pond. This will certainly be our first choice next time.
