The preserved road gives you lovely views of the buildings around it, and there are ancient ruins and other historic sites along the way. It was amazing to learn that this small stretch is part of an ancient Roman road that once linked Italy with Spain. Definitely worth visiting if you’re in the area.

You can walk down onto the exposed stone slabs and follow in the Romans’ footsteps. Set about 2 meters below today’s ground level in the historic heart of the city, the site feels like a small open-air amphitheatre with steps. The Via Domitia was built to support trade between Rome and its colonies in Spain. It crossed southern France at the Col de Montgenèvre, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence above Briançon, followed the Durance, then continued toward the former Languedoc-Roussillon. Roughly speaking, it follows the route of the A9 motorway to the Spanish border at the Col du Pertus. The chariot wheels were spaced about the same distance apart: you can see their marks in the paving, and the gauge is roughly equal. The roads were paved only at stopovers and in towns. In the hinterland, they were packed earth. Milestones helped travelers find their way along the Via Domitia, and the best known in the Narbonne area is in Sigean.

August 2025: Built in 118 BC, La Via Domitia was the first Roman road in Gaul. It connected Italy with Hispania, now Spain, by crossing the province of Gallia Narbonensis, and played a major role in Narbonne’s history and that of the wider region of southern France.
