The staff were wonderful, and the food was very tasty. The spa felt special and was amazing, though I wish it stayed open later. The hotel’s atmosphere and high standards leave you wanting more. It’s in a perfect spot, surrounded by lovely forest trails for hiking. You can sense how unique the place is as soon as you step into the lobby.

The service was truly disappointing, and the hotel was not accessible for older guests. Half the rooms were outdated and poorly maintained, and the elevator was broken without the hotel telling us in advance. They knew an 81-year-old was travelling with us, yet instead of moving her to a room with elevator access, they suggested she use the stairs and walk outside over icy ground. Even the hotel manager showed no interest in helping or repairing an already awful stay. Appalling, and we won’t return. There are many other hotels in the area, so I’d look elsewhere.

I stayed three nights on a business trip. The hotel has been renovated, and my large, well-equipped room was excellent, though the mattress was very hard. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were all great, and the staff were kind and helpful. A few things could have gone better. Some of the younger restaurant staff struggled with English, and on our first evening, when we had no French-speaking colleagues with us, we felt a few people avoided us. A little training would help, even just explaining that someone speaks English or German. The older reception staff were helpful in a mix of German and English, as was the gardener, who suggested a walking route for 7 a.m. The gym is small, but the equipment is new, clean, and works well. My colleagues were enthusiastic about the spa. I’m looking forward to coming back.

We paid €325 through Groupon for a night for two with a five-course dinner, which was more than we usually spend. Finding a date was a hassle, since Saturdays were booked up for two months, and we ended up paying another €40 for a slightly more expensive room. Then there was an extra €80 for dinner, covering the appetizer, water, wine, coffee, and table service. There were tiny blood spots on the sheet, and the room was very small, with no shower and a design we really disliked: pink cushions, fake animal fur, and pink lighting. We had a laugh because the whole thing felt surreal, but it wasn’t worth the money. The extra charges weren’t made clear: they didn’t show us a menu or explicitly say we’d have to pay, and seemed to present it as a gift or part of the deal. Maybe we were naïve, but I really dislike this kind of business. Be aware, everything comes at a high price.

We’d booked two hotel rooms, plus dinner and breakfast for 11 at the restaurant, for a family celebration. We expected a relaxing weekend in lovely surroundings, as the website promised. Instead, we arrived to find a building site. Construction had wrecked the grounds, much of the hotel was boarded up with chipboard, and almost the entire spa was closed. There was a makeshift jacuzzi outside. The website still didn’t warn that the hotel was nearly all under construction, and the actual photographs are far more glamorous than what you find. When we raised the condition of the place with the manager, we were shouted at, berated, and at one point accused of lying. The hotel was the one misleading us by selling an experience that wasn’t available, then treating guests so badly. The service was unacceptably poor and the whole experience incredibly disappointing. The restaurant food was fine, but hugely overpriced. Breakfast was poor too: a tiny selection in a cramped corner of the small dining room, which became impossibly crowded when the hotel was busy. Hotels need renovations, of course, but guests should be told how severely the work will affect their stay, and we should not have been treated that way.
