There’s plenty of interesting hiking and sightseeing in the area. On my birthday, my son and I hiked a loop from Aulus-les-Bains to the Cascade d'Ars. We also followed a handwritten “Fromage du Chevre” sign several kilometres down a lane to a farmhouse and came away with a wonderful selection of fresh and ripe goat cheeses. Another day we hiked to a neolithic stone work. We bought lamb sausage from a local butcher, who wouldn’t sell it until my wife could pronounce it in French. Her school Cajun French from Mississippi wasn’t quite up to it. All in all, a memorable trip. My late wife and I first stayed here in 2000. The room was clean and comfortable, and the restaurant was superb. Back then, it had a bib-gourmand in the Michelin Guide. We liked the area so much that we returned in 2001 to celebrate my 60th birthday, just after 9-11. My son joined us for a week of hiking and sightseeing. We stayed in a nearby gite that time, but had my birthday dinner at the hotel restaurant. I ordered the special, a timbale of pork, and the waiter, who was practising his English for a possible job in London, checked that I knew it included meat from the “foot of the pig.” I did, and that was what I wanted. He seemed pleased. It was delicious, one of my best birthday celebrations.

The staff we met were nice, and I’d like to book one of the rooms with a little balcony overlooking the back garden and pool next time. We had rooms 28 and 27 on the second floor, linked by a door, which worked well for a family, with one double and one twin room. They cost 80€. The rooms were large, with dated decor and old-fashioned furniture that brought the 1950s to mind, but the double bed was perfect and very comfortable. The bathrooms had plenty of towels and toiletries. We enjoyed a quick dip in the pool. Breakfast was very good at 8€50. The hotel bar and dining area were strikingly large, with old-style decor. The three-course menu was 28€ and looked good, but was too expensive for us this time.

The kitchen team did a lovely job for our group lunch of 40. We had generous portions and ate well. The set menu was a warm chèvre tart, roti de boeuf, and ice cream cake, and everything was delicious. Thank you to the kitchen team.

The hotel has been run by the same family for more than a century, and the original details give it a lovely atmosphere. The dining room and breakfast salon are wonderful, and the garden is neat. After a day cycling, the pool was a welcome relief. We were a group of nine cyclists on demi-pension. Dinner was well cooked and suited us, with a pasta dish, and breakfast had an excellent full buffet. We’d gladly return for the old-world surroundings, a pleasant change from modern, soulless hotels. Many thanks.

The staff are nice, and the restaurant food is pretty good. The place feels very basic, though. Our toilet door wouldn’t close, the sockets were annoyingly placed, and I didn’t like the bed blankets or sheets.
