Hotel de l'Abbaye Saint Germain

I was made so uncomfortable that I hurried through my food just to get out of there. I’d called earlier to check whether I could bring my dog for coffee and was told clearly that it was fine. Once we arrived, though, the waiter said dogs generally weren’t allowed. He spoke to me as though I’d done something wrong just by coming in, then came over again when my dog briefly sat on the couch and told me in a very disrespectful tone that he couldn’t accept it. He kept giving me disapproving looks for the rest of the visit. A hotel that presents itself as refined and welcoming should offer better service. I was only following what I’d been told on the phone. A very disappointing experience. Franchement la honte.

The room is small, sure, but that didn’t matter to us. The service is excellent, breakfast is lovely, and the shared sitting areas feel elegant. It’s our favorite place on the Left Bank, especially handy for the Luxembourg Gardens, Ste. Sulpice, and the Sunday street market on the Blvd. Raspail.

On my last day, a male staff member came into my room while I was in the bath, even though the do not disturb sign was on the door. The hotel was run down and the staff were rude. I’d give it less than one star if I could. A truly awful, inhospitable place, in a way only the French could manage.

The rooms are small, but they’re nicely equipped, and the food is lovely. Everyone working here has been kind and helpful. This was visit number three for me, and I’ll be back again.
