The gardens on the far side are well worth a stroll, and the courtyard is striking in person. Daniel Buren's black-and-white columns play against the classical arcades in a way that feels both composed and playful. Kids climb them, people sit along the edges, and the light shifts across the space. I didn't have as much time to linger as I wanted, but I'm glad I stopped at Palais-Royal while nearby. Historic architecture and contemporary art share the place surprisingly easily. Worth seeing, even for a short visit.

It's striking to see the grand buildings and attached gardens the Cardinals had during the Monarchy. A sculpture has been put in the forecourt, and people can stand on it for photos. Well worth a visit.

The Palais Royal complex was built in the 1630s for Cardinal Richelieu, then later served as a royal residence. Artist Daniel Buren reportedly made the black-and-white striped pillars, each a different height, around 1986. It was a fascinating place, and lots of people were filming using familiar concepts. I'd recommend a visit.

I went around sunset and found there weren't many people around. The rows of pillars at different heights make this a distinctive and popular place for photos.

The courtyard has a playful, lively feel thanks to its instantly recognisable black-and-white striped columns, all at different heights. It's a peaceful spot where historic architecture and contemporary art come together.
