Maison 46

The morning staff were extremely kind, and breakfast was excellent, one of the best parts of my stay at Maison 46. But I left disappointed and wouldn’t stay again. On arrival, the person checking us in wasn’t openly rude, but felt unwelcoming. We’re foreigners and tried hard to speak French, though we aren’t fluent. That effort didn’t seem welcome, and the staff member switched to English reluctantly and coldly. A few days later, I heard the same person speaking fluent English on the phone with another guest, which left me with the impression that the issue was willingness, not ability. The hotel also seems due for renovation. Our curtains were broken, and housekeeping was inconsistent: sometimes the room wasn’t properly cleaned or the bed wasn’t made, and once it wasn’t made at all.

The staff were polite and friendly, and breakfast was quite good. But there was no hot water in my room in the morning. It was winter and very cold outside, so a cold shower was extremely uncomfortable. Reception said there was nothing they could do, so I heated water in an electric kettle to wash. It was a really unpleasant experience. You don’t expect to need a kettle for a shower when you book a hotel.

Maison 46 was just right for me and my friend for two nights, despite the doubts I’d had after looking at the Google Maps reviews. The front desk gentlemen were welcoming and polite, helped us with everything, and stored our luggage when we asked. We had a great weekend exploring and slept well. Everything was clean, the air conditioning worked nicely, and it was quiet, even with August being vacation time for locals and construction on the street. The location was ideal, a 24-minute walk to the Eiffel Tower and eight minutes or less from the metro. The lift was small, but we chose the stairs every time anyway. No complaints, it met my expectations!

The worst part was what happened at 7 AM while I was asleep: someone opened my room door even though I’d locked it from the inside, saw my belongings on the chair, then quietly left. I don’t know who it was or how they got into my locked room, and I felt completely unsafe and vulnerable. Before check-in, I’d also tried for several weeks to reach the hotel by email and phone to ask about a higher floor at the same price, but got no response. When they finally answered, they said it wasn’t possible. I asked when such rooms might be available because it mattered to me, and they replied, “We don’t know.” That service was completely unacceptable, and the security issue made the whole experience deeply unsettling. I would never recommend staying here.
