New Hotel Lafayette

For a four-star hotel charging £270 a night, I expected cleaner facilities and much better service. My room smelled strongly of sewage when I arrived, and the bathroom walls had brown smears. Reception’s manager was dismissive when I reported the smell and said nothing could be done because the hotel was full. Nobody apologized or offered compensation. On the second night, I asked for more body moisturiser, and the night manager came to my room to rudely tell me they don’t provide room service. I felt like a nuisance. I was very disappointed with the facilities and the way I was treated.

I booked through a broker but had to cancel at short notice on the same day because I couldn’t make the trip. Despite what seemed like efforts by the broker, I’m being made to pay the full price for every night. I understand charging a fee, especially for the first night, but I can’t understand having to pay for all the later nights too.

A nicely renovated hotel in a quiet location, with friendly staff. The rooms are small, and breakfast was average. Good for Paris standards.

The location was great, and I found it quiet and safe. For what you pay, it’s a decent option for a solo traveller, though it isn’t five-star quality. My room was very small but worked for one person, and I’d asked to be away from the street, so I had a nice view of the quiet courtyard. The AC ran all night, despite what some other reviews say about it turning off. The bathroom is so cramped that water from the shower ends up all over the floor. The room floor hadn’t been vacuumed either, and I stepped on dirt and hair throughout my stay. We also had the fire alarm go off in the middle of the night, as other reviewers have reported, so it doesn’t seem to be an isolated incident. Breakfast needs work: cold, watery eggs, stale pastries and bread, and not much else. I’d skip the extra cost and try one of the nearby cafes.
