The accommodation itself was uncomfortable enough that we left early. The bed was awful, and the owner had patched the bed slats with tape. They fell through all three nights, leaving me in a hole. The bathroom was badly laid out and worn out, and I couldn’t even shower standing up. I’ve seen more spacious bathrooms in Paris. There were also dust and hair in the cutlery drawer of the little kitchen, and the bathroom had hair and body hair left by previous guests. The place was very dirty, with cobwebs everywhere and cloudy panes in the door. Getting to the Pautonier was difficult too. The access road is just a dirt track full of holes, unsuitable for a car that isn’t built for it. When we arrived, the owner didn’t seem to know we were coming, even though I’d emailed our arrival time the day before. We felt like an inconvenience, and got only a very brief tour of the accommodation. We were also told the Wi-Fi wasn’t available and that most restaurants in the area were closed, hardly encouraging news on arrival. The owners showed complete disregard for the problems we raised. I asked for a goodwill gesture, but it wasn’t considered. I feel strongly that I was cheated and misled by a place that looks fine at first glance. If the owner doesn’t want to offer even a basic level of hospitality, perhaps they shouldn’t rent it out. They didn’t even come to say goodbye at checkout. I’m still willing to discuss what happened with the owner.
The guest rooms are in a former stable, with comfortable furnishings and tasteful decor. You reach this peaceful spot in the Percheron countryside by following a dirt road through the woods. The owner was welcoming and had useful suggestions for enjoying the area.
The owner’s treatment of my friend and her children was appalling. I had booked a room at the Pautonier for her, close to my wedding venue. She arrived with her two sweet young children and was greeted rudely, almost aggressively. He told her, “We don’t treat children here,” and, “Things will be better once you’ve paid,” even though the room had been reserved with a deposit six months earlier. He also said she was on her own for breakfast, that he’d put everything out but wouldn’t serve her. Then he charged extra for her four-year-old, who was sharing with his young mother and seven-year-old brother. The whole attitude was rude and boorish. To make matters worse, the milk bottles served to the children at breakfast had expired three months earlier. The road was in such poor shape that the car dropping my friend off got a flat tire. Avoid this place. There are far more charming and welcoming places in the region, run by real professionals and kind people.
We were given a friendly welcome, and the room was comfortable and pleasant. It’s a charming setting, though the very bumpy access path is tricky and best avoided in a low car.
Charming room, decorated with good taste.
