Hôtel Le Castelet

We enjoyed an afternoon beer on the terrace, and breakfast was excellent. The restaurant was closed when we visited in mid-September 2023, so for dinner we walked about 20 minutes down the road to the very good pizzeria at the campsite. The countryside is beautiful, and there’s covered parking beneath the hotel, which is especially useful if you’re travelling by motorbike. A balcony and French doors in our room opened onto lovely mountain views. The hotel has kept much of its original 1970 character, from the marble floors and fabric wallpaper to the woodwork and vintage furniture. In this little sleepy village, it makes for an unexpectedly glamorous retro feel. Some areas are gently worn, as you’d expect in a working hotel rather than a pristine museum, but the atmosphere is wonderful. A good fit if you like authentic 60s and 70s style and peace and quiet. Maybe not if you want to stay up late at a hotel bar or restaurant.

The staff were lovely, and if you book a balcony room the mountain views are stunning. It’s a pretty old hotel in a really cute spot near Ax, with a nice rustic feel. The rooms themselves are basic, though, and the bathrooms are very old. You can tell it must once have been a great place, but it could use some renovation.

I haven't stayed here, so I can't say anything about the rooms. From the outside it's a nice-looking hotel, a couple of miles from Ax Les Thermes, with easy access and parking outside.

Fine for a night, and the hotel itself is okay. The walls are a little thin, though, so you can hear everything the neighbors are doing.
