It’s a lovely place tucked away from the main roads, with just five rooms and a personal feel. Breakfast comes right to your table, served by really lovely people. Having your own transport is probably handy for getting into Perpignan or out to the beach. Ubers are usually cheap, though the wait can be around 15 minutes.

The personal welcome is what makes a guest house special for me, and Mas Latour Lavail gave us that feeling while still being only about 15 minutes from central Perpignan. I’ve found some of my best hospitality experiences around the world in guest houses, especially historic places where comfort and a warm welcome matter. This 16th-century Catalan farmhouse has been renovated with modern comfort and design alongside traditional materials. Lionel Lavail, director of the Cazes wine house in Rivesaltes, restored the mas where he grew up. Its three rooms and two suites are named after Vin Doux Naturel wines, with decor that picks up the colours of each wine and connects to the region’s wine history. The suites look out over the vineyards. There’s also a spa called “Le Vieux Pressoir,” made in the old wine vats, plus a private pool and terrace. It’s a chance to be welcomed as a guest, rather than treated like a room number.
